WIP: Frankenstein’s Monster!

Frankie

Long time no see everyone! Yes I know, I’m a naughty blogger.

Life’s been busy! Still chugging away at season 6 of Johnny Test, which by the way, has been going very well.

Here’s a quick sketch I’ve been doodling recently – Frankenstein’s Monster. Done in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro in little bits and pieces. It’s nice to stretch the drawing hand once in a while!

Enjoy!

Fun with (cartoon) guns!

Gun sketchesGreetings and salutations! I hope everyone is enjoying the new year thus far.

The new (sixth) season of Johnny Test is moving along quite well. We are just a couple of months from wrapping pre-production. There is still a long way to go before the series is complete; but so far the shows are looking quite swell.

Working on an action packed series like JT6, there are many opportunities to develop and draw high tech props. Here are a bunch of guns I doodled up quickly a little while back. I was trying to come up with a few varieties of fun and interesting shapes.

Hope you like them!

Commando Cody flies again!

Well, sort of. I was thinking about some of the old Republic Pictures serials I watched as a kid (no, I’m not that old – just saw some reruns). Commando Cody (played by George Wallace – no, not the politician or comedian) was the hero of Radar Men of the Moon, a 12 episode series that ran in 1952.

With what looked to be a cardboard helmet and jetpack, Cody would successfully fight off  the moon men and fly into that proverbial sunset at the touch of his nipple buttons. His costume may seem crude by today’s standards, but what a marvel he would have been to children of that era.

Wouldn’t it be great if Cody was revived today? Here are a couple of sketches of some updated costume ideas. My preference is the design on the left!

Sketch of the day! (EDITED May 22nd, 2012)

Here are some warm up sketches I did while working a bit on some freelance designs. This guy’s somewhat of a caricature of myself – something I hope to use in an upcoming personal project. I actually did a sheet of exploratory poses sometime last year (where my avatar is originally from); but I seem to have misplaced that file. If and when I find it, I’ll post it.

But for now, here’s the new version!

EDIT – I just found the older page of sketches. I’ve inserted it into this page as a slideshow.

STRANGE Sketch of the day!

Hey there folks! Okay, it’s been a while since I posted a sketch of the day. So here’s a treat, 3 sketches at once! While I was working on some other stuff, I felt the need to draw some comic book art.

That got me to thinking how fascinated I’ve always been with Marvel’s Dr. Strange. Even though I never really followed the character (outside of reading one of those pocket-sized compilation graphic novels at the public library), the scripting of a broken man being given a second chance at life was always a powerful storyline, even to a 7 year old boy like me. It’s a good thing that the 1978 TV movie didn’t completely turn me away from this particular comic book character (for those of you that haven’t seen it, breathe a sigh of relief ).

I also decided to try to update Strange’s costume. It’s the big thing these days isn’t it, to REBOOT everything known to man! However, I have to say that Dr. Strange’s garb is probably the one that needs the most redesigning.

As you can see from the photo, I actually sketched these out on a note pad with a cheap ball-point pen (and uh, some liquid paper). Can you say “old school”? ;)  There’s nothing like being able to feel every nuance of the paper and pen under my fingers. I don’t think any amount of technology will ever simulate it.

Now, I’m hoping that over the next while I can paint these sketches up with a little colour for some flair! So, stay tuned!

Pirates AHOY! Blargh!

I was inspired by Charles Laughton’s portrayal of Captain William Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), also starring Clark Gable. It’s about the political and social divide between the British officers and seamen aboard the HMS Bounty during a voyage to Tahiti. If you haven’t seen this classic black and white film, I insist you do!

While watching the film, I doodled out a few sketchy caricatures and ended up with this rough character sheet. I figured it would be fun to draw the character in a UPA’ish/Flintstones limited animation style. Instead of Bligh, I call this little guy Captain Blargh! Drawn and coloured in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.

A long, overdue update!

Sorry, I know it’s been quite a while now since my last official post. This year has proven to be one of my busiest so far!

Over the summer I really focused on my training for the Tough Mudder Toronto. Also, work has been keeping me really busy as we continue to roll out the sixth season of Johnny Test. There have been a lot of other changes going on in the background; but I won’t bore you all with the details. Needless to say, it’s been a rollercoaster of a summer.

I’ve been doodling here and there in little, tiny bits – not as much as I’d like, but better something than nothing. So hopefully I’ll be able to post a few of them shortly.

Stay tuned and stay strong!
